In a letter to The Times, Bulgarian ambassador to the United Kingdom, Marin Raykov rejected a negative review written by historian Colin Shindler about the play "The Brief Life and Mysterious Death of Boris III; King of Bulgaria”. The Out Of The Forest Theatre will perform the play on August 28 at the Edinburgh International Theater Festival. The play was written by Joseph Cullen and Sasha Wilson and is based on the book "Crown of Thorns" by Stefan Gruev.
"Sir, you write that the play ... was 'rewriting of history' because of the claim that the Bulgarian monarch saved the lives of 50,000 Jews during the Holocaust," Ambassador Raykov writes. "The play reflects the historical facts correctly," the diplomat adds.
"The role of the king was decisive, because he was the person who controlled all the main centers of power," Raykov concludes.
August 15 marks the 80th anniversary of the death of Tsar Boris III.
