Rumen Radev calls for “vigilance against onslaught on freedom and democracy”

The trivialization of fascist theses and acts in recent months is something that causes concern, President Rumen Radev told reporters, and gave as an example the aggression on social media and the compilation of lists of untrustworthy journalists.

“Intellectuals are calling for media control and censorship. At the same time the memory of anti-fascism is being erased. Bulgarians are snitching on Bulgarians on the website Myrotvorets. Different revisionist and anti-Semitic texts are circulating. This is an onslaught on freedom and democracy, and society should be vigilant,” Rumen Radev said.

In a comment on the sadistic act of violence against an 18-year old girl in Stara Zagora, when the court let the perpetrator go and only remanded him in custody again after a public outcry, President Radev said it was not a show of good taste to justify the “ridiculous proposals for amendments to the Constitution with this malicious act”. Changes to different laws are needed that will set down clear criteria of the crimes and the severity of the punishment, he said.
