We celebrate the Assumption of St. Anne

Photo: Archive

The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates today the Assumption of Saint Anne - the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The saint is worshipped as one of the main Christian symbols of motherhood.

Bulgarians call this feast the Summer Saint Anne. According to the belief, pregnant women and young brides visit the church, where they adorn the icon with flowers and other offerings. They also pray for the health of their children and light candles in front of the image of the patron saint. At the end of the service, the mothers hand out cakes so that their offspring will be healthy.

St. Anne is believed to protect children from fire and fever.
