Parliament rejects proposal for a referendum on the adoption of the euro

The National Assembly has rejected the proposal by Vazrazhdane party for the holding of a national referendum with the question: “Do you agree to the Bulgarian Lev remaining the only official currency in Bulgaria until 2043?” The proposal was previously rejected by the parliamentary legal affairs committee.

One of the motives for the rejection is that by joining the European Union, Bulgaria has accepted entry into the Eurozone. Vazrazhdane say that a check by the Civil Registration and Administrative Services directorate has established the petition has collected more than 470,000 valid signature by Bulgarian citizens.
