Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov has confirmed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is arriving in Bulgaria today.
In the course of one hour, Bulgaria’s prime minister answered questions by journalists and members of the public live on Facebook. Nikolay Denkov said that the programme of the Ukrainian president’s visit envisages a meeting between the presidents of Ukraine and of Bulgaria. Meanwhile tight security measures are seen to be in place in Sofia, with a police and gendarmerie presence around the buildings of the National Assembly, the Presidency and the Bulgarian National Bank. Later, President Rumen Radev’s press service stated they expected the press service of the Council of Ministers, at whose invitation Volodymyr Zelensy is paying a visit to this country, to make an official announcement regarding the visit.
The National Assembly is to discuss a draft declaration on Ukraine’s membership of NATO. Yesterday, the government approved a draft declaration between Bulgaria and Ukraine which reiterates “our strong political support for Ukraine in its fight against the Russian aggression in defence of its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and along its road to membership of NATO, when conditions permit.”
A memorandum with Ukraine in the sphere of energy also is to be signed during Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to this country, PM Denkov said further.
He further stated that Ukraine had made an enquiry about the reactors from the Belene nuclear power plant project last year, but that the caretaker government had not taken the matter forward.
