The new government is pushing Bulgaria closer and closer to the war, President Radev says

“The policy of the new government is to push Bulgaria closer and closer to the war,” said President Rumen Radev before his departure on a visit to Austria.

“In pushing its positions unilaterally, the government cannot reach a sustainable solution,” said Rumen Radev, in answer to a reporter’s question why the Bulgarian delegation to the NATO summit in Vilnius will be headed by PM Nikolay Denkov and not the president.

“I do not think it appropriate for politicians with modest electoral support to talk and to assume such serious commitments on behalf of Bulgaria. Anyone with responsibilities and ambitions in the sphere of security and defence must know well, and abide by the Constitution, the Defence and Armed Forces Law and the rulings of the Constitutional Court, which categorically state that the president is commander-in-chief in war, as well as in peacetime,” Rumen Radev added.

"The government is not pushing the country to war. The entire democratic world is helping Ukraine in whatever way it can. Since the first day of the war, Bulgaria has exported a huge amount of weapons to Ukraine, but the difference between the commercial price and the delivery is twofold. Some intermediaries have reaped up to 100% profit", GERB leader Boyko Borisov commented on the president's words.

Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov also commented on President Rumen Radev's statement that the cabinet was increasingly pushing Bulgaria to participate in the war. He specified that with its intention to provide more decisive military aid to Ukraine, the government strictly complies with the decisions of the National Assembly on this matter. "The caretaker government was also sending military aid. Minister Tagarev has already specified several times that what we are preparing is similar to the packages that were sent from the time of the interim government", said the Prime Minister.
