For the first time, Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev named Movement for Rights and Freedoms' MP Delyan Peevski, sanctioned under the Magnitsky Act, as one of the people behind the attempts to fire him. Mr. Geshev said this prior to the meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council, which is discussing the request for his early release for undermining the prestige of the judiciary.

"We are in danger of reverting back to the times when we were governed in violation of all principles of separation of powers by a three- or five-member body called the 'Politburo'. I believe in my colleagues, in the judiciary, in the members of the SJC, that they will not enter the political scheme perhaps of Delyan Peevski and Boyko Borissov. And I believe in the motherland and in the Bulgarian people," Ivan Geshev said.

A short while later, he left the SJC meeting saying that he would miss his plane to Strasbourg, where he would be heard in the European Parliament. After a vote, the Council members decided to continue the procedure in the absence of the Prosecutor General.
