The idea is being discussed in parliament of eliminating the position of prosecutor general.

In an interview with BGNES, Nadezhda Yordanova from the parliamentary group of We Continue the Change/Democratic Bulgaria and former minister of justice in the Petkov cabinet announced that discussions would be held with other parliamentary groups next week, so as to find what the MPs agree on in terms of changes to the Constitution. Nadezhda Yordanova pointed out that “the institution of prosecutor general carries uncontrolled power with it”, and the shared position is for it to be changed entirely and to no longer exist.

Earlier in the day, Tatyana Doncheva, lawyer and leader of Movement 21 warned, in an interview with the BNR, that if there is no prosecutor general, Delyan Peevski from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms would be the one that would head the prosecution system because he has appointed key prosecutors locally. Doncheva stressed that Bulgaria has always had a prosecutor general and the right thing to do is to replace him, not eradicate the position.
