The number of sparrows in Bulgaria is dropping at an alarming rate

The number of sparrows in Bulgaria continues to decrease. This useful bird for humans, which is used to living near and together with us, is disappearing precisely because of humans. This is shown by the results of the seventh edition of the "We count the sparrows" campaign

The territories where their population is completely absent are also increasing. 

The reason is that the sparrows use the bushes as a shelter from predators, but when they are removed, the sparrows have no shelter and become victims, ornithologists explain.

The house sparrow is in the declining species category with a 51% decline in population. The data is from a survey of widespread bird species in Bulgaria, which began in 2005. 

The last census from this year shows that the highest number of sparrows are encountered in the regions of Yambol, Shumen and Pleven, as the volunteers of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds have counted 3,556 sparrows per 276 locations nationwide.

Statistics show that since the 1980s sparrows in Europe have decreased by nearly 250 million. And their absence is an indicator of a problem in nature, experts warn.
