Bulgaria's Supreme Judicial Council accepts as admissible the second request for removal of the chief prosecutor

The plenary session of Bulgaria's Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) unanimously accepted as admissible the second proposal for early release of the prosecutor general Ivan Geshev. Both requests were made by members of the Council's Prosecuting Authority. 


The first request, adopted on May 25, is for an alleged serious breach of official duties, and the current one - for possible actions damaging the prestige of the judiciary.  It refers to the words "political garbage that must be swept away" addressed to the MPs. 

Before voting on the regularity of the proposal, the Supreme Judicial Council rejected Ivan Geshev's request to suspend the procedure. He suspects that "the political influence of the GERB party is behind this" and that it represents "an attempt to seize judicial power and a totalitarian coup".

Later today, Ivan Geshev referred a signal to the Constitutional Court regarding the changes in the Judiciary Act, which introduce a mechanism to investigate the Prosecutor General.
