The National Investigation Service (NIS) is no longer part of the prosecutor’s office, and is now an independent structure by force of the amendments to the Judicial System Act, approved by parliament at second reading. The NIS will now have a director; as part of the prosecution, the NIS was headed by the prosecutor general – either directly or indirectly via a director who was also deputy prosecutor general for the investigation.

The merger between the NIS and the prosecutor’s office took place in 2009, but through the years this has proved to be a bad decision, commented Boyko Rashkov, MP from We Continue the Change/Democratic Bulgaria.
