On the Saturday before Pentecost, 3 June, the Bulgarian Orthodox church marks Cherry All Souls’ Day, on which Christians honour their dead.
On this day church bells toll mournfully, and believers take flowers to the graves of their loved ones where they light a candle, pour wine over the grave and offer incense. Wheat is also taken to the grave, and to church, where bread is broken and the pieces handed out with the words: May God rest his soul.
