On May 11, Bulgarians in the country and abroad honor the memory of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles and Educators Cyril and Methodius with a number of events. The Thessalonian brothers enlightened the Slavic peoples by creating the Glagolitic script. The apostolic and cultural work of the holy brothers started from their mission in Great Moravia. Their disciples developed successfully their deed among the Bulgarian Slavs. Later, the Glagolitic alphabet created by Saints Cyril and Methodius was transformed in Bulgaria into the Cyrillic alphabet and from here it spread to the rest of the Slavic people. Thus, for the first time, with the blessing of the Pope of Rome and the other local churches, the dogma that Christianity should be spread only in Latin, Greek and Old Hebrew was officially overcome.

In 1980, Pope John Paul II proclaimed Saints Cyril and Methodius co-patrons of Europe. With his encyclical letter “Slavorum Apostoli” Pope John Paul II defined the work of the Holy Brothers as a spiritual bridge between the cultural and religious traditions of Eastern and Western Europe.
