The Bulgarian government demands the criminalization of online sharing of pirated content. The changes to the Penal Code have been approved by the Cabinet. They provide for the creation, maintenance of pirated torrents, web platforms, chat groups in applications for the online exchange of pirated content to be punished with up to 6 years in prison and a fine of up to 5,000 euros (BGN 10,000).

The use of special intelligence means against intellectual piracy is permitted. Individual users of pirated works are not punished.

The legal changes were submitted to the parliament after the procedure started in the USA against Bulgaria for not actively fighting against online piracy.
