Parliament fails to elect National Assembly speaker on first attempt

The MPs from the 49th Parliament failed to elect a National Assembly speaker on the first attempt. The nomination of GERB/SDS, Rosen Zhelyazkov, was voted down. 78 MPs voted in favor, 8 MPs from "Vazrazhdane" voted against and 144 MPs abstained.

The nomination of Vazrazhdane, Petar Petrov, was also voted down. 37 MPs voted in favor, 88 MPs voted against and 39 MPs abstained.

The coalition "We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria" proposed that a rotating presidency be introduced. The proposal envisages that the National Assembly speaker and the Chairman of the Parliament’s Legal Committee be rotated every two months.
