The Commission for Consumer Protection (CPC) carried out 755 inspections in food retailers. 651 infringements, including 254 unfair commercial practices, have been found. According to CPC experts, these practices are applied systematically and are a prerequisite for an artificial increase in food prices. The inspections are focused on large food retailers, because most people do their shopping there. Goods are given properties they do not possess. Thus, they are sold at a higher price, said Angel Dzhalev from the Consumer Protection Commission.
However, according to the Chief Executive Officer of the Association for Modern Trade Nikolay Valkanov, 60% of the inspections found no violations. In his view, the court will declare most of the acts void. According to Nikolay Valkanov, a price cap is impossible and a cap on the markup would distort competition.
