Bulgarian caretaker Minister of Culture Nayden Todorov met with UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture Ernesto Ottone and the head of the Europe Unit at the World Heritage Centre, Ms Berta de Sancristobal, during their official visit to Bulgaria. The delegation toured Sofia, Plovdiv, Sozopol and the nearby island of Sts Quiricus and Julietta, which Bulgaria plans to turn into a World Arts Centre.
Ernesto Ottone was impressed by the project and said UNESCO could support it with expertise. After visiting the Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Sozopol, Ottone noted, "I have only seen similar underwater archaeology projects in Tunisia, Italy and Spain. The centre you have here is unique for your country and something you can be proud of."
The guests were also very impressed by the Plovdiv Great Basilica of Philippopolis and its Roman mosaic heritage. They said they had seen many mosaics, but none on such a large area and not so beautifully displayed.
