Not enough is known about the bright example of Bulgaria, which saved its Jews, Vice President Iliana Iotova said at the international conference "The Role of Lawyers in the Rescue of Bulgarian Jews", held in Sofia.

The population of Bulgarian Jews is the only one that was more numerous after the Holocaust than before, Vice President Yotova added and noted that these are the words of a Jewish survivor. The recognition of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews is in these words and they should sound louder than words of denial, Vice President Yotova went on to say. 80 years ago, Bulgaria managed to save 48 000 Jews. This unprecedented act wrote one of the brightest chapters not only of Bulgarian, but also of world history, Iliana Yotova said.

The rescue of the Bulgarian Jews during World War 2 shows the crucial importance of civil mobilization. It also serves as an inspiration for today's efforts to fight contemporary manifestations of anti-Semitism, caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikolay Milkov said at the conference.
