A UNESCO delegation is paying a three-day official visit to Bulgaria at the invitation of Bulgaria’s Minister of Culture Nayden Todorov.

At a meeting in Sofia with Vice President Iliana Iotova, UNESCO Assistant Secretary-General Ernesto Ottone laid emphasis on the appreciation for Bulgaria’s efforts to preserve the cultural heritage, and more specifically the immovable cultural heritage, and stated that the work Bulgaria is doing makes it a strategic partner for UNESCO. The delegation is now in Plovdiv where it will visit the Episcopal Basilica. The nomination of the Episcopal Basilica and the Roman mosaic heritage of Philippopolis has been included in the UNESCO tentative list of important cultural and natural sites in 2018.

Tomorrow the delegation from UNESCO will travel to Sts. Quiricus and Julietta Island near Sozopol where discussions will take place on the project for the construction of a world arts centre.
