At the end of 2022, there were 2,030,318 pensioners in Bulgaria. The average pension amounted to EUR 345, which is close to the 2023 poverty threshold – EUR 257. According to the National Social Security Institute, the average old-age pension reached EUR 360 euros at the end of December, and the invalidity pension for general sickness was EUR 265.
Male pensions averaged EUR 384 and fermale pensions were around EUR 318. 55,000 people have retired and another 37,000 have been granted invalidity pensions for general sickness. Meanwhile, the National Social Security Institute terminated more than 131,000 pensions in 2022.
