Academician Julian Revalski, President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is proposing that the international airport in Sofia be named Vasil Levsli. Academician Revalski has sent a letter to caretaker Prime Minister Galab Donev suggesting that the Council of Ministers discuss the idea, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has announced.
The proposal comes as Bulgaria is honouring Vasil Levski, known as the Apostle of Freedom, 150 years after his death.

“With this act we shall show our deep respect for the national hero of Bulgaria who has contributed so much to the revival of the Bulgarian spirit and the liberation of our country. Besides a cosmopolitan figure, the Apostle was also a benefactor during the founding of the Bulgarian Literary Society in 1869, of which the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is the successor,” Academician Revalski writes in his letter. Such a proposal was first made in 2017, and though it received wide support, was never put through.

Located about 10 kms. East of the city centre, Sofia international airport (SOF/LBSF) is the biggest and busiest airport in Bulgaria. More than 35 airlines operate regular passenger and cargo flights, as well as seasonal tourist programmes to and from Sofia.
