All textbooks in Bulgarian schools to become gratuitous

Textbooks will be free for all students from 1st to 12th grade, MPs unanimously decided today, while voting on amendments to the Preschool and School Education Act.

Currently, this measure applies only to children up to the seventh grade.

The decision will enter into force in the academic year 2024/2025, when BGN 80 million (EUR 40.9 million) will be needed to provide free aids for students from grades 8 to 12. The adopted changes also apply to e-readable textbooks.

According to BSP leader Kornelia Ninova, who introduced the bill, 300,000 children will benefit from the social benefit, and their families will save BGN 300 (154 euros) each.
