Bulgaria should explicitly decide whether to have new nuclear capacity

Bulgaria must decide whether it will develop nuclear energy, interim Energy Minister Rosen Hristov told BNR.

A National Strategy for the next 30 years will be presented for discussion to trade unions, businesses and MPs at a round table on 17 January. It envisages four nuclear reactors to be built by 2050.

The Minister expects the National Assembly to adopt the Strategy, which will then be the basis on which Bulgaria can renegotiate with the EU a new timetable for reducing carbon emissions under the Recovery and Resilience Plan.
Bulgaria's revenues from electricity exports for 2022 amount to €3 billion. They are certainly larger than the Recovery and Resilience Plan funds we will receive annually, Hristov said.
