79 years since the most destructive bombing of Sofia

Photo: Archive

On this date in 1944, during the Second World War, the most destructive bombing over Sofia took place. It was carried out alternately during the day by American and at night by British aircraft.
Over 1,700 bombs were dropped on the capital city, hundreds were killed and injured, mostly civilians. The damage was far-reaching.
A mass evacuation of the population began. The state institutions also moved out of the city and continued the administration of the country from "Chamkoria" (present-day Borovets resort), recalls the Regional History Museum - Sofia.
