The town of Troyan (Central North Bulgaria) marked the 145 anniversary since the battle for Troyan Pass and its liberation from the Ottoman rule. The battle for Troyan Pass (Beklemeto Pass) was considered one of the most difficult battles during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. It began on January 3 and lasted for five days amid freezing temperatures and a winter storm.

26 Russian soldiers were killed, 62 were wounded and 6 went missing. After the battle, Troyan welcomed the troops led by General Pavel Kartsov as liberators.
