Bulgaria's National Social Security Institute (NOI) has revealed a large-scale scheme to drain the Pensions Fund. It refers to false documents from closed enterprises, about dozens of people appointed to the same position, about signing employment contracts with dead people.

The most drastic case is related to certificates of the state company Stroimashinengineering, declared bankrupt in 1997, deleted from the registers in 2012 and declared to be the legal successor of another state company. Thus, in the period 2012-2017, more than 350 false applications for granting or recalculating pensions were submitted in the capital with attached employment records and unrealistically high incomes entered in them.
With the disclosure of the scheme, particularly large damages have been prevented, considering the long-term payments, for which several million BGN are needed annually.
