The accessibility of the external environment is the biggest problem of visually impaired people in Bulgaria, the Union of the Blind in Bulgaria said for the BTA on the occasion of the International Day of the Blind marked on November 13.
The organization does not have exact statistics on the number of visually impaired in Bulgaria, but as of January 1, 2022, more than 11,000 people with over 71% impaired vision were members of the Union of the Blind in Bulgaria. Visually impaired people are confused by poor pavement markings, the signalling of traffic lights, etc. There are not enough guide dogs. Moreover, there are not enough employment programmes in support of the people with visual impairments. There are only two specialized schools for children with visual impairment in Bulgaria - in Varna and Sofia.
