After major renovation and restoration, the first grade school in the authentic village of Shiroka Luka in the Rhodopes has now reopened. The school, built in 1888, is now opening doors as a Museum of the Spirit, displaying artifacts, documents and photographs connected with the history of Shiroka Luka. Visitors to the museum will also be able to see unique exhibits connected with early Christianity.
The “St. Panteleimon” school was built on donations of 22,000 Turkish Lira donated by local master builders Kostadin Bozov and Vassil Belogashtev-Kyotata. The walls of the building are inclined inward to help protect it from the elements. However, for 30 years the school building was neglected because repair work had been started and then halted before 1989. The restoration of the building, which belongs to the Plovdiv Bishopric, cost over 700,000 Leva.
