For about a quarter of a century, there has been talk in Bulgaria of a stronger local government, of decentralization, but this is still not happening. Only 10% of municipal budgets are spent with a legitimate decision of the Municipal Councils, as the remaining 90% are allocated by the government, the National Assembly and the central government.

This is what Nayden Zelenogorski, member of the Management Board of the Association of Bulgarian Cities and Regions and former mayor of Pleven, told BNR.
According to him, the municipalities hope for at least a 21% growth in the municipal budgets, so that they can overcome the problems with inflation and the prices of energy carriers, etc. He expressed hope that the new deputies will take the necessary changes in this direction.
