The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry is conducting a survey among vine growers to identify wine regions with protected geographical indication. The industry has until October 28 to answer.
Currently, there are two wine regions in Bulgaria: the Thracian Lowland and the Danubian Plain. Vine growers can choose between three options:
The first option provides for 8 wine regions – The Struma River Valley, The Mesta River Valley, the Rhodope Mountains, the Danubian Plain, the Strandzha Mountains, The Rose Valley, the Thracian Lowland and Dobrudja.
Option 2 provides for 7 wine regions – the Black Sea, The Struma River Valley, the Rhodope Mountains, the Danubian Plain, the Strandzha Mountain, The Rose Valley and the Thracian Lowland.
Option 3 provides for 9 wine regions - North-Western Bulgaria, the Danubian Plain, Northern Black Sea, Southern Black Sea, South-Eastern Thrace, Western Thrace, Sakar and Eastern Rhodopes and the Struma River Valley.
