Bulgaria can become the energy centre of Southeast Europe, former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said at a lecture in Sofia. He denounced Russian aggression in Ukraine and accused the West, including Joe Biden's administration, of not supplying enough weapons to Kyiv to win the war more quickly.

Moscow's strongest weapon is energy supplies, the American diplomat also said, adding that Europe should free itself from Russian supplies and rely on its own sources. It is in this sense that Pompeo sees an opportunity for the deployment of Bulgarian energy potential, BNR reported.

The former secretary of state also called for the restoration of shale gas extraction, which he says is an important step towards greener energy sources.

Mike Pompeo is in Bulgaria at the invitation of the chairman of the Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria Kiril Domuschiev.
