At a sitting lasting more than 12 hours, the Supreme Judicial Council refused to terminate the term of office of Bulgaria’s Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev. Only 2 members of the Council voted for the removal of Ivan Geshev, all other members, 16 in number, voted against.

The debates on the proposal by Justice Minister Nadezhda Yordanova and her predecessor from the caretaker government Yanaki Stoilov for the early termination of the term of office of the Prosecutor General were turbulent. Before the start of the discussions, Ivan Geshev stated that the motives for the demand for his resignation were political and aimed to gain control of the prosecutor’s office. Minister of justice Yordanova responded that demanding that the Constitution and of the law be observed did not constitute control of the prosecutor’s office, but rule of law.
