NATO's presence in Bulgaria has no alternative

After the Russian aggression in Ukraine, NATO forces need to be deployed on Bulgarian territory as a precaution. The Alliance's previous presence has no alternative, according to a report on the state of defense and the armed forces submitted to the Bulgarian parliament.

The shortage of personnel remains high. Most of the weapons and military equipment are obsolete, which negatively affects the implementation of missions and interoperability. The lack of working aircraft reduces the flight hours of pilots to 7.5% of the minimum and reduces the level of safety for flights. The technological backwardness of the army, which hinders its operational efficiency, is another worrying factor, the Defense Ministry said in a report.
