Italy assumes leading role in NATO multinational battle group in Bulgaria

Italy is to assume the role of “framework nation” of the multinational battle group in Bulgaria, by force of a Council of Ministers decision.  

Italy’s leading role means that it will deploy up to 800 servicemen with the necessary armament, equipment and technology on the territory of Bulgaria. There will be 40 personnel from Albania who will reinforce the battle group, formed after the start of the war in Ukraine with the aim of strengthening NATO’s collective defence along the Southeastern flank. Bulgaria’s contribution will consist of one company of up to 140 personnel and up to 15 headquarters staff. This country’s responsibilities will be connected with support as host country.
