Bulgaria’s National Assembly rejected the bill of "Vazrazhdane" party proposing zero VAT on basic foodstuffs, medicines, water, electricity and gas. 73 MPs voted in favor, 66 MPs voted against, and 48 MPs abstained.

We have provided a draft estimate of the losses, if a zero VAT is adopted, the leader of “Vazrazhdane” party Kostadin Kostadinov said. They will be to the tune of nearly EUR 1 billion. Time will show whether the proposals of “Vazhrazhdane” are unfeasible. Some EU countries already introduced zero VAT on food and medicines, MP Kostadinov noted.

“Your proposal is unfeasible and populist”, MP Iskren Mitev from the ruling party "We Continue the Change” replied.
