Ten out of the 24 quarters in Sofia do not have suitable bomb shelters, according to a report by the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Protection of the Population.

More than 500,000 people live in these areas, according to a report by bTV. Krassimir Dimitrov, director of the Emergency Aid and Prevention Directorate of the Sofia Municipality has told BNR that only a few hiding places were in good condition while the remaining 150 were unusable. He added that the capital's metro system could be used as a shelter for nearly 1 million people. Underground garages and basements could also be adapted for this purpose.
