The Economic Police is checking the Sofia Municipality for illegal spending of funds accumulated from the municipal waste tax. The investigation started after media publications.
During the inspection it has been established that funds totaling 42 million euros were not kept in the designated account for taxes and fees, but in an account in which all revenues of the municipality are received, which is in violation of The Law on Local Taxes and Fees. The exact amount of the funds will be known after an audit by the National Audit Office, experts from the Ministry of Interior said.
Collected materials are to be sent to the Prosecutor's Office in order to decide whether to initiate pre-trial proceedings.
