Bulgaria is the EU member state with the highest number of prosecutors per capita and the highest ratio of government spending on prosecution to gross domestic product, Minister of Justice Nadezhda Yordanova said in connection with the decision of the government to cut the budget of the prosecution by EUR 10 million. In her words, the prosecution’s inaction proves costly.
Earlier on Thursday, Bulgaria’s Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev said that the reduction of the budget of the country’s judiciary, which was proposed between the first and the second reading of the 2022 state budget, is an encroachment on justice and human rights.
“This is not a reprisal. We are talking about a proposal of Bulgaria's MPs aimed to ensure effectiveness of public spending”, Minister Yordanova noted. "The prosecutor’s office spends twice as much on recreational and training facilities as compared to all courts", Nadezhda Yordanova further said.
