With 129 votes in favor and 90 against, the majority in the National Assembly have adopted the budget of the National Health Insurance Fund at first reading. Healthcare expenditures are expected to reach over EUR 3 billion by the end of 2022, which is EUR 300 million more in comparison to the past year. The health insurance contribution level of 8% of income will be kept, with employers continuing to pay 60% of the amount and employees - 40%. The clinical pathways are to be phased out and replaced by a different scheme.

The government described the NHIF's draft budget as a step towards reforms in the sector. The opposition described it as a copy of the previous one. "Despite the increased costs, there are no guarantees that people would have better quality and access to health care," the opposition said.
