The government’s policy is for a deep judicial reform and for countering corruption effectively. This absolutely does not mean simply substituting one individual for another.

This is how Prime Minister Kiril Petkov answered, in writing, a question by the European Parliament’s LIBE Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group regarding public statements he himself has made: “It is our role to appoint people in the prosecutor’s office and the Anti-Corruption Commission.”

“It is a question of putting an end to the practice of political appointments and of “installing” persons in leading positions in the judicial system and in the executive branch who are not in possession of the required professional or moral qualities. The specialized court and the specialized prosecutor’s office, as they exist now, are not an effective tool for combatting organized crime and have so far only be used for settling political scores,” Kiril Petkov adds.
