The European Parliament’s LIBE Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group is organizing a hearing on the situation in Bulgaria on 27 January, 2022 in Brussels, Bulgarian MEP Elena Yoncheva announced on Facebook.

The European MEPs will invite representatives of the coalition government, the Prosecutor General, as well as other institutions connected with the rule of law on the country. The representatives of the ruling coalition are expected to present their plans of reform in the judiciary, for accountability of the Prosecutor General, as well as legislative amendments that will help effectively combat corruption. The European Parliament will also focus on media freedom and preventing so-called SLAPP lawsuits (aimed at restricting civic activism) against journalists and civil society activists.
