There were 100 more victims of road accidents in Bulgaria in 2021 in comparison to 2020, according to traffic police as of January 1, 2022. Full data will be released in February.

6,069 serious accidents occurred by December 2021. In 2020 they were 5,708. A total of 557 people died and 7,596 were injured, while in 2020 the numbers were 463 and 7,121 respectively. The figures are close to those of 2019, when there were no traffic restrictions due to Covid and the accidents were 6,730 with 628 killed and 8,499 injured.

The rise for 2021 is drastic and puts the country at the top of the EU's black chart with about 80 victims per 1 million inhabitants.

The tragedy with a bus from North Macedonia on November 23rd, which killed 45 people, was the deadliest in the past year.
