In January natural gas will cost BGN 133.41 a MWh, excluding taxes and other levies, the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission has decided. This means a price rise of over 30%.
The gas operator Bulgargaz declared that even with this latest hike, the price still remains much lower than the prices on European exchanges. According to the company, the price hike couldn’t have been avoided even if Bulgaria received the entire contractual quantity of gas from Azerbaijan instead of one-third as it the case now. Bulgargaz says that during the winter months even the entire contractual quantity of Azeri gas would not be enough to meet one-quarter of the consumption in Bulgaria. The main factor for the natural gas price hike is the price rise on the European exchanges on which the price in this country depends.
