Turkish court allows the decision of the Strassbourg Court regarding Bulgarian border guards case

The Criminal Court in the Turkish city of Kirklareli allowed the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, which confirms the innocence of Bulgarian border police officers accused of the death of a Turkish poacher. In 2008, while guarding the sea border, four Bulgarian border guards received an alert that a vessel had entered the Bulgarian territorial waters off Rezovo. The border police officers were sent to detain the vessel. In the course of the arrests, one of the fishermen-poachers resisted and was shot, and later died of his injuries. Only the coast guard who produced the shot was indicted. Subsequently, the charges against the Bulgarian coast guard were dropped.

According to the lawyer of the Bulgarian border guards, the Turkish court must take the decision of the European Court of Human Rights into account. He called on the court to refrain from searching for the border guards with an Interpol red notice. The Bulgarian side has refused to provide biometric data of the border guards. The case was postponed to July 5, 2022.
