This year the astronomical winter will arrive on December 21 at 5:59 pm, Pencho Markishki, a physicist at the Institute of Astronomy with the National Astronomical Observatory at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, said in an interview with BTA. This is the date of the winter solstice - the shortest day of the year, lasting 9 hours, 2 minutes and 41 seconds. Accordingly, the nights around December 21 are the longest in the year, lasting nearly 14 hours and 58 minutes for the latitude of Sofia, the physicist said .
After December 21, the day will start to grow, at first imperceptibly - only a few seconds a day.
