MPs have set up a temporary committee to tackle the energy crisis and high electricity prices. The proposal of the opposition GERB-SDS to impose a moratorium on the price of electricity was accepted and the price will be frozen at the level of January 1, 2021. The proposal was supported by all parliamentary groups with the exception of the MRF that did not participate in the vote.

Debates over the creation of a temporary committee on the energy crisis and electricity prices lasted more than two hours. "An old parliamentary cliché is that when you want to postpone a decision, you create a temporary committee," Hassan Ademov of the MRF said. According to him, the purpose was transferring responsibility from the government to parliament.

Later, the temporary committee decided to change the duration of the decision. It is to enter into force on 16 December 2021 and will last to 31 March 2022. This decision will be voted on in plenary hall tomorrow.

"Such nonsense with a moratorium on electricity, heating and water prices can only be born in the minds of former GERB rulers. This is not out of concern for Bulgarians... They do it for a group of investors who are currently earning huge amounts of money. And with this moratorium they will continue to do so," Rumen Ovcharov of the BSP, former Minister of Energy, has told BNR.
