This is the first weightlifting gold for Bulgaria in 14 years

Bulgaria's Karlos Nasar wins the gold in Tashkent, setting new world record

The 17-year-old Bulgarian Karlos Nasar has won the title in the 81 kg category at the Men's World Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He topped the ranking with a total of 374 kg. In the snatch event, he lifted 166 kg winning silver, only 2 kg less than the gold winner, Marin Robu of Moldova, thus setting a new world youth record.

In the clean and jerk event, the Bulgarian weightlifting sensation was unbeatable: 200 kg in first attempt, 205 kg in the second attempt and finally 208 kg, which set a new world record for youths, juniors and men in this category. Thus, the gold medal in his match was secured with a total score of 374 kg.

Nasar brought Bulgaria its first men's world title since 2007. Then Ivan Stoitsov won the gold in the 77 kg category at the championship in Thailand.

Karlos Nasar was born on May 2, 2004 in the town of Cherven Bryag, Northern Bulgaria. His first major international participation was at  the 2018 European championship in Milan, where he took the gold and the European title.
