Rail transport in Bulgaria and in the EU as a whole has marked a significant contraction in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This is shown by data released today by the European statistical office Eurostat. However, Bulgaria is the country with the smallest decline in the EU in the number of passengers carried by rail.

In 2020, a little over 16.8 million passengers were transported by rail in Bulgaria compared to 21.3 million in pre-pandemic 2019. This is a decrease of 21.2%, or the lowest in the EU.
In terms of freight transport, Bulgaria is in second place in the union in terms of growth (+18.7%) after Ireland.
