More than half of Bulgarians say corruption in health care is wide-spread

There is corruption in the health-care sector - this is the opinion of 60% of Bulgarians. However, only 18 percent of those who have encountered such practices have signaled about them. This is shown by the data from a poll by Global Metrics, conducted in the second half of May and commissioned by the Bulgarian Institute for Legal Initiatives.

According to the study, many problems have emerged during the Covid pandemic, such as neglected care of the chronically ill, poor prevention, almost zero level of post-hospital care, limited access to specialists for part of the country's population, erroneous medical treatment protocols and more. The shortage of staff, as well as the inadequate equipment in some of the medical establishments have also been becoming more and more noticeable.

Half of the respondents say that they have not visited a hospital in the past 5 years. Many of them say that medics in private hospitals were more polite and responsive. 72% of Bulgarians in the survey say they would like to be treated in private hospitals if they had the financial means for that.
