“Gala in Sofia” – this is the title of the concert by Sonya Yoncheva and Placido Domingo in Sofia today, 31 August. To mark the occasion, an exhibition of photographs opened in the garden in front of the National Theatre building, of Sonya Yoncheva’s performances on the world’s opera stages through the years.
There has been a lot of news about Sonya Yoncheva these past few days. Her managers announced that she had won the “Singer of the year” award of the prestigious “Opus classic 2021” for her album “Rebirth” in English. The official award ceremony will take place on 10 October at the “Konzerthaus” in Berlin. Alongside the classical repertoire, the album “Rebirth” features a popular Bulgarian folk song (Lamb bleating), plus ABBA’s “Like an Angel passing through my room”.
Sonya Yoncheva was made an honorary citizen of the town where she was born – Plovdiv – “for her exceptional contribution in the sphere of opera art and in public life, for her enormous contribution to the development and popularization of culture, the assertion of the national and international prestige of the city of Plovdiv, as well as her commitment and her support to Bulgaria’s young opera talents.”
